A 7 parter for Josiah's birthday! Oh yes...birthdays are such a HUGE deal for kids. Every slightest whisper of the word 'birthday', triggers a birthday frenzy...Here's a quick collection of parts 3 to 7. (Parts 1 & 2 here)

Part 3 - Celebrating with family (19 Oct)

Part 3 of Josiah's brithday celebrations continued on the same night at home. The family joined us at our place to celebrate Josiah's 5th over food, cake and soccer.
Josiah is 5!

Made the cake this time around - a no-bake ice cream cake as our oven isn't working. Perfect for Singapore's weather too anyways...Yums :) Used store bought La Cremeria's Choc Obsession, Dreyer's Cookies & Cream, some oreo cookies, digestives and topped it off with a yummy frosting (This frosting is easy to make and works really well for me)

Picture
Method:
Crush digestives
Mix digestives with butter
Press digestives into bottom of Springform pan
Freeze for 15 min
Melt ice cream, stir and pour into pan

You can layer the ice cream cake anyway you want, just let it freeze 30 minutes between each layer.

So the cake looks a bit prettier when sliced, I layered it as such:
digestives - choc obsession - cookies & cream with extra oreos - digestives - choc obsession

Let it freeze overnight before trying to frost it. Next time I'll try to pipe on the frosting instead of spreading it as the cake started to melt too quickly! Singapore lah...what to do...

Part 4 - Celebrations in school (21 Oct)

I wanted to do something a little extra for Josiah's birthday in school this year besides the usual cake cutting. The idea for the keychains came as we had made some keychains with shrinking plastic during the Children's Season at the Asian Civilisations Museum earlier this year, so I bought a set from Daiso to try it out with Josiah & Joanie.

The kids had fun colouring, they got to see some 'magic' as the plastic curled and shrank in the toaster and they were mighty pleased with their personalised little trinket :) Key learning - don't give the kids too many options for the designs. I prepared 4 designs and that was probably 3 too many...hah

If you're interested to try this out, you can get the shrinking plastic from Daiso (not always in stock) or Art Friend. Art Friend has them in white, black and translucent, and they come sanded, so you can use colour pencils on them. If you get the shrinking plastic from Daiso, they don't come sanded, so you'll have to use permanent markers or sand them yourself (you can get a sheet of sandpaper from any hardware store).

Part 5 - @ the movies for Despicable Me 2 (22 Oct)

On Josiah's actual birthday, 22 October, I brought the kids to watch the Despicable Me 2 movie that, coincidentally, was one of the movies being screened this month for GV Mums & Babies. It's great to be able to watch a movie, and not have to shush the kids or worry about Joash crying. So kudos to GV for this great initiative.

This was Joanie's & mummy's first time watching the movie, and Josiah's second...and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves over popcorn and minion mania :) Papa really wanted to come along too but sadly wasn't able to as he was assigned some last minute work...

Part 6 - Birthday dinner at Swensens! (22 Oct)

Thanks for the complimentary Firehouse birthday sundae, Swensens!
If you didn't know, you'll get a complimentary firehouse sundae if you go to Swensens on your actual birthday (IC or BC required). Josiah received 2 complimentary sundaes - the firehouse and a junior coit (birthday month perk for Swensen's Kids Club members) which we all got to enjoy :)

Part 7 - Hokey Pokey (27 Oct)
And to cap off the birthday extravaganza, we brought Josiah to claim his free birthday entry at Hokey Pokey.
